Plutarch the parallel lives: the beginning of the end: marius, marius eliminates the property requirement 10 bc. poor volunteers do not at once become the norm. crassus leads an army of southern italians. names a bunch of new senators and expands the senate key move. changes who gets to be a senator. marius had been associated with popular crowd in contrast. new senate had lost a lot of members. one consul and one tribune vs. sulla. sulla rushes off with his army and marches on rome [9: [9] so long as he is punishing the people he hates he doesn"t care about the rest. plutarch is naturally sensitive to this since he is greek. plunders the city shows no regard for the glory that was/is athens: cuts down sacred groves, loots the treasures of temples to help finance his soldiers and war machines.
