CLA 233: Week 8: March 8 th -theatrical element in Plutarch -Antony and Cleopatra presenting and staging (Plutarch does the same) -lots of dress up being played (i.e. Antony dressed as servant) -appearances vs. essences -the bad East (Alexandria) -excess, effeminacy, tyranny -*women theme* -can tell Antony is a bad man because of the women he associates with -chooses Cleopatra (drugs, madness, poor military decisions) over Octavia (ideal aristocratic Roman woman) -East (Cleopatra) vs. West (Octavia) Plutarchs Life of Antony Opening: well-connected family background, active in the age of Marius and Sulla 2.3- sexual relationship with Curio according to Cicero -Curio uses pleasure to persuade Antony (pleasure vs. virtue) 3- Military exploits 4-his body -virile quality (Hercules like) -drinker, partier, lots of sex -manly powerful 5-sneaking around in servants costume (has good reason at this point, later not so much) 9-Dallabella t
