Lecture 8: Evidence for average life expectancy in Greece and Rome cont. • Rome  defined time based on who was consul at the time • Data text o Censuses, taxation documents o Example census from Oxyrhynchus (papyrus)  completed by Sarapion, sometime during Augustus’ reign (30 – 14 BCE)  Debates about the practical use of skeletal excavations • But optimistic • The material containing the data surviving for us o Very little survives  What remains gives us the extent we have lost  Little papyri left  most lost (organically disintegrated) • Most from Egypt  when it was under Roman empire o Greek tombstone
