Document Summary
Education and how athletics fit into greek ideas and systems of education: how athletics and athletic education fits into idea of the polis and the affairs of the polis. Background: up until classical period, nothing we could term public educational system. Up until 5th century, very minimal if you wanted to get what we consider education (learn to read and write, perform music, etc. ) you would really have to have the resources to do it. The polis would not do this, up to the individual family hence, limited to elites. Doesn"t suddenly disappear: at the height of the classical period, we see the greeks really considered about how they educate their youth. More and more city states begin to think about how they want to bring up their youth. Not equivalent to modern thoughts, not out of this philanthropic feeling; more how to optimally shape the youths to grow to benefit the state.
