Descartes" opposition to hobbes: arguments are not religiously motivated and deserve to be taken seriously. You can manipulate matter all you want but you can"t get meaning out of it. Those pieces of matter don"t have any meaning in themselves. Problem of original meaning: how do you get meaning into matter. If it"s mechanical, then it can"t pay attention to the truth.
