John stuart mill (1806-1873) influential for a lot of contemporary arguments about criminal law. Harm principle is associated with mill and his work on liberty. Mill himself is the son of a scottish philosopher named james mill, who was friends with. He was raised in a utilitarian lifestyle, he was a fast learner (learned greek at 3 and latin by 8) Difference from bentham - has a more complex understanding of utility. Him and his wife worked closely together and credits many of his ideas to her. Democratic/popular tyranny in some ways is more troublesome than state-sponsored tyranny because the former encompasses all forms of life, enslaving the soul" (p. 9) Mill was raised in the utilitarian tradition. Harm principle (p. 11): that principle is, that the sole end for which mankind are warranted, individually or collectively, in interfering with the liberty of action of any of their number, is self-protection.
