CSB327H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Basal Lamina, Epithelium, Cell Nucleus
Document Summary
Cells are a continuum from the nucleus to the matrix and back to the matrix of the cells. Ecm regulates cell shape, proliferation, differentiation, migration, signal transduction, survival. Prime determinant of shape and tissues is the ecm which determines the biochemical properties of tissues structure and function are co- related. Cartilage is the prime determinant of tissue shape. Final shape of bone is determined by the cartilage blueprint . This is dictated by the ecm (whether you"re flexible, elastic, or rigid) Bone is primarily made of calcium phosphate and collagen (an ecm molecule). Less than 10% of bone is cellular: basal laminae (bl)/ basement membrane: About 300 ecm coding genes give rise to the ecm that defines cell and tissue shape and function. There are 4 classes of secreted ecm proteins: collagen, proteoglycans, glycoproteins, non-collagenous structural proteins. If one cell signals another to change it"s phenotype, then the signal must traverse the ecm.
