Document Summary
I neurons talk to e neurons to generate patterns of inspiration and expiration. Looked at the brain stem of a headless rat and part of the spinal cord: took electrodes and looked at action on hypoglossal nerves (due to tongue contracting during inspiration) Functional organization of the rrg: found that left phrenic and right phrenic discharged synchronously, cut in half the brainstem and spinal cord and measured left rrg and right rrg, right rrg was able to produce its own pattern. Left rrg produced a small pattern, but still a pattern nonetheless: rhythm was still disjointed however, much more organized when together. Smith et al: neurons firing doesn"t mean it produces behavior, sliced up the brain into thin slices and recorded the phrenic nerve, looked at prebotc and examined activity of phrenic nerve and hg nerve: Found activity of excitation and relaxation: could not conclude its breathing - so rather its fictive breathing.
