Document Summary

Cri205 lecture 5: economics, social strain and crime. Poor socialization, low social capital, alternative value systems. In some cases, crime cases poverty, not the other way around: wealthy individuals end up lower class - commit crime, prison, etc, or if in poverty and commit crime and get caught - trapped in cycle. Social disorganization theory: work of shaw and mckay (also known as concentric zone theory) Anomie theory: durkheim and anomie: rules of behaviour become inoperative. Anomie occurs when society loses control over people"s goals and desires. Strain theory (merton): social adaptations to the gap between culturally defined goals and the socially accepted means for attainting these goals. Individuals walk away from society and retreat from reality: rebellion - actively resist goals of society and create new, overthrow society, ex. Terrorism, not traditional criminal doing it for financial status, want to create new society. Poor neighbourhood and everyone is the same - not aware, no inequality.
