Cri210 week four - october 3rd, 2016. Rapidly emerging as a key public issue. Broad police power require police to be accountable. High profile public issues have amplified concerns. Legitimate monopoly over society over the use of force. Michael brown and eric garner both black men shot by white police officers in the us. Police did not want to provide evidence. These officers were not indicted as the jury deemed there was sufficient evidence. Garner was an unarmed black man who was choked to death by an officer. 100 black people were killed in the us in 2015. Internal mechanism: policies of the department, improved training (bias, use of force, etc), increased supervision of street level officers, change in leadership or style of leadership, internal affairs where officer investigate other officers. External mechanisms: civilian review boards, legislative controls, control by the criminal courts. People who have no vested interest in the police or associated with them.
