Review: different ways it"s easy to get culture wrong (1) need to have clear understanding of what culture is (2) need to represent culture accurately, orientalism. Lens that distorts reality of other people and places: typically negative, power differentials. Just as much diversity in all of these major cjs tradition as we see in the european tradition: role politics and ideology play, different factors, history, culture, political ideas ad struggles, different ideas about crime, punishments, trends. Idea that strong social programs reduce crime: how strong social program associated w/ reduced severity of punishments for crimes, gives several reasons for the (1) solidarity. In this model, people don"t see criminal as different from them, as bad people, instead have solidarity with offenders: translates into reduced severity of punishment. In this model and in liberal model, a lot of responsibility for providing social services that provide dby state in social democratic model, falls on women.
