CJS201H Lecture March 12/2014 Zionism: • Jewish nationalism did not want to get bogged down into questions of right/left • It wasn’t concerned about particulars (taxes, education, etc.) • But rather concerned about creating the nation along socialist lines • Not all states were socialist but most were • Emphasis is on collective, the return to land, physical labor,  • Adopted many critiques of Marx’s capitalist society • Collective ownership, equality of outcomes • Arabs would be hostile to the founding of the state of Israel, but they also  believed that over time with socialist policies, with economic development, etc.  equality of rights, that eventually the Arab population would come around  • This attracted the largest percentage of the vote in Israel  • They believed in equal rights for all (including the Arabs) • This becomes the dominant movement, and the dominant political machine  within Israel  • Vladimir (Zev) Jabotinsky  o Believed there needed to be an ‘iron wall’ they needed to be prepared to  fight   In order to
