Asked 211 questions about age, sex, religion, education, race, occupation, etc. Subjects were: agriculture, commerce, industry, land holding, etc. (some of these questions will only be asked of certain people in the community). 1881 census takers were required to oath of secrecy and bc, manitoba, and pei were added. 1901 growth in content; went from 216 questions to 561 (beginning of industrialization, asking about work etc. ) 1912 census went from ministry of agriculture to the ministry of trade and industry (creating more manufacturing jobs, changing identity as a country and wants to portray itself as industrialized/create a new political narrative) 1918 creation of the dominion bureau of statistics (became stats canada) which is a whole branch dedicated to statistics/centralization of surveillance and knowledge production.
