Lecture 1: Feeding a Growing Population The Manure pit is a treasure pot A peasant saying Fertilizer = farming Why Rice? - Is a staple food in many country - Provided with water, produces 13 more product then wheat - Has a much higher seed ratio - Natural form of fertilization - Rice is labour intensive - Rice transplantation (planting spruce) huge shift in cultivation o Grow them and then pluck them out o Replant intense labour Advantages o Shortens the growing season can get 2 or 3 rice crops in a year o Doubling the growing capacity o Improves your rice seedlings more choices to pick from (get the healthiest crop) o Irrigations Reason why governments stop it, felt it was risky Farmers had to take it upon themselves so they can make more money
