[1] species can"t coexist within patches - spaces as niche: orange example + goldenrod example, prey driven extinct by predators managing to exist in patchy landscapes. Inferior competitors able to persist in face of superior predators. [2] species can already coexist within patches case. Natural microcosms: track of what goes on: often in science use microcosm studies to create artificial community where we can keep, natural microcosm is naturally structured at that spatial scale, used moss-mite systems. 2 papers (gilbert + gonzalez) - 1998. Looked at what happens when start to fragment habitat. So is like a control for the corridors. Pseudo-corridor treatment has same total area as corridors treatment but no real corridors. Habitat loss and loss of connectivity reduce diversity. Showed that in all cases, when decreased amount of habitat, got loss of diversity: consistent whether they looked at alpha diversity or gamma diversity (sum of diversity across patches or percent predator species)
