IRE367H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Public Address System, Performance Appraisal, Performance Management
Document Summary
Talking about fair rewarding of people doing those jobs at different levels of competence and performance; need to be as equitable as possible. Performance appraisal systems are not effective without performance management, and vice versa. The two concepts are different, but inherently linked. Isolated process that occurs once or twice a year where the performance level of an individual employee is assessed and its done against toms predefined criteria. Broader and systemic method for improving employee performance through goal-setting, feedback, encouragement, and rewards for success. Stems from earlier appraisal efforts to manage by objectives. Research shows it"s pointless to do performance appraisals and companies are moving away from them. Performance appraisal seems to be essential in modern firms, yet the available research would suggest that an effective pa system is elusive. Having an effective performance assessment/appraisal system is the exception rather than the norm and is very elusive to achieve.
