Notion and picture of owning your own farm was very appealing. Ross knew about these prairie hardships born in saskatchewan and worked in banks. Working in the bank, he had immediate witness of making the dream of owning farm possible, of farm life, disastrous weathers, and life on prairies. Ross awareness of duality and complexity in things. Storm is source of destruction but also source of inspiration and regeneration for the characters. Land can be harsh and depressing but inspiring. Characters can be isolated but also find sanctuary. Ross witnessed something that captured the beauty and devastation of nature/ sky. He saw the beautiful sky which was the aftermath of the hail storm that destroyed farms.
