Document Summary

Cleanth brooks is constantly using the reflexive pronoun because the urn always goes back to itself. Culler says that its all about people"s reactions to the poem. Therefore they are outside the urn: the poem invokes the people invoking it. It can"t do this so the urn keeps expanding to include more and more of the outside. The line between the inside and the outside has become a problem. The line is also a line of security not just that of poetry: creates uncertainty in everything. Historicizing is what came out of the discontent caused by new criticism: end up using a form of formalism, they also end up sucked by in in a sort of reverse formalism. Wrecking the inside and the outside destroys boundaries. Don"t know whats gonna happen at the end even though (according to brooks) we should know.
