Document Summary
Way in which the aesthetic engages in all kinds of complicated and ambiguous ways with the political/social world. Prometheus as the champion of humanity and entirely unrepentant. Stolen fire from the heavens and given it to mankind. Condemned by jupiter to be chained to mt. Caucasus and have his regenerating liver eaten by a vulture. Shelley picks up escalises story and dramatizes it as a story about the origin of evil and how to overcome it. Deals with abstract themes but also resonances and allusions to the political world. The idea of reconciling with the redeemer is repulsive to shelley. In act 1, prometheus asks to hear the way he had once cursed jupiter. Chained to the rock, having endured endless years of torture. Effort to try and recall the curse he once uttered against jupiter. We have already a drama in which there are clear political resonances. A suffering revolutionary who will not yield to his oppressor.
