PARADISE LOST  11/19/2013 British Lit­ John Milton’s Paradise Lost  **Anything highlighted is important for midterm  Intro to poem and Milton: Epic poem Written during the 1640s­ wars main between royals and purists  Upheaval politically at this time  Epic­ define grand form of poetry usually long (12 books) Faerie Queene is also 12 cantos­ journey also  consists of decent into the underworld­ setting is broad­ conflict (wars and obstacles, supernatural  interventions) begins with invocation of muses/powerful characters­ usually takes place in the middle of  things (in medias res) Epic Similes­ really long description build one on top of another Figures of national importance, ie. All of mankind; something to preserve its fame – universal importance of  our hero  Often talked about as a biblical epic Verse it is made of­ not rhyme but blank verse, unrhymed iambic pentameter Spenserian Pentameter and Iambic tetrameter – Prose/verse How form reflects content Uses his difference in prose as a way to show his rebellion Book 1:  Drawing on other epic texts and culture Also touches on the book of Genesis  Milton is the one who says that the fruit Eve
