Joanna Russ: “When It Changed” Feminist sci-fi novel -demonstrate competent, strong, self-sufficient women, defies stereotypes Perspective of Janet Evason. Takes place on human colony on another planet “Whileaway”. Plague killed all men leaving a population of women, who have figured out how to combine eggs → offspring. “parthenogenesis” Agricultural society, whole range of human behaviour (men & women) in an all-female society. Janet fought duels, girls love to hunt and go on adventures. Astronauts arrive, shocked at all-female society, assumes society as deficient. Conflict between sexes, janet's wife tries to kill them. The men speak of gender equality on earth, women are dubious given men's condescension. What it means to be a woman, different views on gender roles → shock factor.
