Document Summary

Colleges used to be about training men to be good christian gentlemen of society. Colleges and churches were kind of the same institution in the early 19th century. Read church stuff and greek and latin: studied the grammar, rhetoric (the basic structures of persuasive speech) Industrialization made the centers of power complicated and changed the college structure (1876, john hopkins" university) University"s were basically copying the german university structure. Was no longer about making men into good citizens, the point became about research. The professor"s were no longer concerned about the student but about what they were pursuing in their research the sentimentality of the old college gives way to the adulation of research. There was an emergence of cultic expertise with the creation and transformation of the university. The university became a vast bureaucratic enterprise: will continue to grow because bureaucracy will always keep growing.
