Document Summary

One word always associated with culture = matthew arnold: lane says we will never know what arnold says about culture. "culture" is disinterested inquiry: rooted in curiosity. "culture" is objective inquiry and wanting to know the "best: can only happen if the "conditions" are present. Makes it the glue that holds the social culture together. Culture is an identity of like people (social unit) Notion of religion as a social glue no longer exists: now becomes a thing that separates not unifies. "machinery" = a new understanding of technology: currently we would call it the "conditions" of capitalism, new "engines of economic development" Becomes very victorian and calls it "anarchy: sees this change as a social danger because the glue is disappearing and once tis gone there is only anarchy. Revolution = celebration of individualism: celebrating of "doing as one likes" which will lead to no rules and anarchy.
