He puts the ideas of literature and art that history will never offer us. -how do we interpret what we know as he is trying to make sense of it himself? (story of self-discovery). In that self-consciousness think about what makes us the people tat we are today. Maybe because he wants to reinforce the sense of collective guilt also it could be the character watching over his shoulder. -the role of memory , the role of representation and myth, the effects of shame and legacy that has on people and the family. Giving a story one ending that was made up by such different narratives is not right.
