Document Summary

Aquatic ecosystems: freshwater and saltwater environments depend on salinity: conc. Of dissolved salts: there are three types of freshwater ecosystems, standing water, flowing-water, wetlands: lands that shallow freshwater cover for at least part of the year. Consists of marshes and swamps: waterlogged soils: anaerobic. Wetlands: animals: migratory birds, beaver, otters, fish, provide 3 environmental benefits, help control flooding, groundwater recharging areas, trap and hold pollutants - sometime can enhance pollution. Important for commercial fish and shellfish: nesting sites for birds, prevent coastal erosion. Major ocean life zones: ocean life is split into 2 major zones, continental shelf, pelagic = free floating, benthic environments, open ocean, pelagic = photic (shallow) and aphotic (deep, benthic = deep sea floor. Pelagic environment on shelves: shoreline to a depth of 200 meters, rich in nutrients, upwelling, euphotic zone, light passes = photosynthesis, large # of phytoplankton.
