Mid-century crosscurrents (see slides labelled september 28th - we are a week behind) Last week: masaccio"s complex, mathematical one-point perspective innovations. The lines on the floor establishes the perspective grid, and guide your eyes to the virgin. The curtains in the top corners add to the illusion of fictive space. The painting is a window" into another world, another realm. The small rectangular crucifix in the foreground is intended as an illusion appearing to be part of the lower frame, popping up. It also separates our space from the sacred space in the image. Writes an artistic treatise, giving us instructions on how to use a perspective grid and also tells us how we should be thinking about pictures that use perspective. He says that we should think about pictures using perspective as being windows into another realm in most cases, the sacred realm.
