CCR199H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Reference Group
CCR199 Lecture 4
āThe reference group has the power, because it decides the laws, whoās in and
whoās out, etc., they get to decide the others. So, you can say B is not A, not A is
not B because A has the power
āTreat the people whose differences they donāt accept as āothersā
āLandowskiās model
āSnob: a person who is not in the reference group and will do everything
and strive to be accepted by the reference group
ā Ex: an immigrant may change their names, the way they dress,
physical appearances, etc. in order to assimilate
āDandy: somebody who is a part of the reference group, but they think they
are better than the reference group and want to rise above the reference
group because they think the reference group is just mediocre/the
majority. They will find ways to show their superiority
ā Ex: professor in the English department who walked around
wearing a cape and had a British accent, but heās actually
American but he puts on this accent because he thinks heās so
superior
āChameleon: behave like chameleons, a person/group of people who are
accepted by the reference group, but are also a part of another world.
They will behave differently when they are in the reference group to be
accepted, then once they go into their own environment, they will behave
differently as well. They don't give up their identity, but they work so that
they are accepted
ā Ex: before, people who were gay in a law firm would act/dress
straight on the job, but on the weekend/the evenings, they join their
own world where they feel they belong
āBear: leaves reference group because in order to self-actualize, they must
lead their own life the way they want. They donāt accept the norms
because they donāt fit what that person really wants to be like.
ā Ex: artists, who just canāt adapt to the norms, they donāt want to
dress like everybody, etc. in order to become the artist they want,
they have to leave
ā Ex: people who decide to live in a cave to meditate for 6 months
because they need a spiritual leave
ā Ex: pianist sleeps all day, rejects interviews, rejecting the norms,
etc. because itās the only way he can become the genius musician
he is
