Questions:
The sixties have been called "The great refusal to conform" which manifested
itself in more than 9,000 protests. Identify some of the issues that led to the
protests.
Protesting the Vietnam war and continued segregation in spite of civil rights for
all African Americans, women’s rights (jobs, access, etc),
The Vietnam war took the lives of 3 million Vietnamese and 60,000 American
soldiers. This created a "breach in consciousness" for many Americans. Explain
the notion of "breach of consciousness" and outline some of the results that it
created.
“Breach of consciousness”: people are becoming more aware of what’s going on
around them and the consequences of the war, and lose faith in their
government/state for allowing this to happen
In what ways did the movements of the sixties create a lasting legacy? What were
some of the dark sides of the counterculture?
Good outcomes: progress in civil rights (end of segregation) and women’s rights
Dark sides: promoted drug use, including hard drugs (part of the counterculture),
a lot of people were socially displaced (they said no to conforminism, no to the
norms, etc. led to difficult readjustment for some people). People ended up
homeless, without jobs, etc.
Some of the changes during the sixties were brought forth by Americans within
the reference group. Other changes were promoted by people who rebelled
against the reference group to create a counter culture. Identify changes in both
categories.
Changes in foreign policy
Outside the reference group: the people of the counterculture
All the Broken Things

Toronto and include all the real street names, etc., the details of agent Orange
are historically accurate, she says in the beginning that Canada never apologized
for helping the US create the chemicals, bear wrestling and circuses with the
