Women dominate memoir writing field in iran. 2 generations: defining experience for 1st: born and growing up in iran, never going back, born in iran, going back as a child, visiting back and forth. There are men who write memoirs: but usually write about government and economics because they are in position of power. What is it like to leave a country that you love and cherish. Our job: to coax from the memoir, not only what is written but what is not written (analysis, think of contribution of memoir to theme of leaving home and never being able to come back. In process of reading, become aware of time and place. 2 generations: 1st left iran for personal reasons. Few returned to where they were born: 2nd left as very young children with their parents who either felt it was best to leave or wanted to leave.
