FOR200 Lecture 5 - Acadian Forest Region
Area of Extent
-Maritime provinces
-Shares compositions similar to the biomes around it
-Unique tree species tie it together (e.g. Red Spruce Trees)
•also associated with this are balsam fir, yellow birch, sugar maple, red pine,
eastern white pine and eastern hemlock
•white spruce, black spruce, red oak, white elm
Long history of land use
-European settlers first made contact with first nations here
-Used to primeval forests - ancient forest
-Most of Acadian forest cleared in 19th CE (mostly for agriculture)
•came back 100 years later
•settlers abandoned farms to gain fortune, go to war, etc.
-Black & caribbean people started coming in
•slaves, settlers, etc.
•trees started to reseed themselves
-e.g. White Pine, Maple, Fruit trees
-(Old) Second Growth Forests - similar in composition to Old Growth Forests but
look very different cos they’re not left alone
Climate
-Moderate climate - warm, moist summers; cold winters, but chill usually
•influence of the ocean is huge
-Precipitation falls as rain, snow and fog (Fog Forests)
