Document Summary
Interpretation: what you have, what size (average dbh, implications of inventory for immediate action and long-term planning. Ex: maybe have a lot of old bad trees. Do we go and do maintenance: 50% of report is interpretation. Optimize leaf area of urban forest: establish canopy of genetically appropriate trees, with minimum risk and cost. How do we optimize entire leaf area of forest: want big trees, leaf area increases as tree size increases, leaf area increases means benefits increase too, see figure. Can"t just leave the urban forest alone. Need to plan ahead when we create plans. A quick tangent: benefits of green urban infrastructure. Storm water attenuation: gets cooler where trees are. Increase physical and psychological health: in cities hit hard by eab, cardiovascular disease and lung disease have gone up. All those benefits are a good reason to have a plan. Guide municipal decision making about the urban forest. Linking science with policy: inform councillors, municipal decision makers.
