Document Summary

Lecture 4: green roofs / influence on health & academic performance. Good for slope and low sloped systems. Structural load capacity: need to include weight of roof system. Sun and shade considerations: sedum are succulent and like sun so need enough exposure, window reflection. Sun reflects off windows and burns plants. Access: need to get people up there to do maintenance, water access/source. Require minimal maintenance depending on client needs. Main purpose: maintain aesthetic appeal of roof. Make sure trees don"t grow up there (extensive root systems could break roof) Lecture 4 part 2: linking urban trees to health. How urban trees play a role in health and academic performance. Humans are increasingly becoming isolated from experiences of a natural forest: we used to be forest dwellers, development has led to urban expansion so have increasing distance. Primary interface between humans and forests is in the urban or peri-urban forest.
