Document Summary
Approaches to animal welfare (based on hewson, c. , 2003. E. g. chickens peck on each other to form a hierarchy. Might want to reduce this in a farm in order to keep the chickens safe/alive. Physical: if an animal is healthy and producing well, it is faring well. Mental: if an animal feels well/contented, it is faring well. Behavioural: if an animal can live according to it"s nature and perform it"s full range of behaviours, it is faring well. What should be prioritised depends on your worldview. Come into con ict with each other in complete mental and physical wellbeing is unrealistic and unattainable. Animal welfare: 5 freedoms: freedom from hunger and thirst - ready access to fresh water and a healthy diet. E. g. forced molting, starving chickens for weeks at a time in order to kickstart egg production: freedom from discomfort - appropriate environment including shelter.
