Research ethics in data collecion: potenial harms for paricipants and research. Physical, emoion, career progression, retribuion: researchers do not have legal enitlement to any informaion above or beyond that of the general public. Diferent from court procedures, police, census, revenue can. No legal authority to force people to talk must acquire voluntary consent. Must do best to miigate harm: informed consent (debrief in case of decepion, conideniality invasion of privacy. Data and idenity have to anonymous if one asks them to be: voluntary paricipaion allowed to voluntarily choose to paricipate, and stop paricipaing in a study. U of t requires all student and faculty research involving human subjects be reviewed and approved by reb before work begins: supervisor approval, ethics review. Interviewing public personaliies: disclosure requirements sill in efect. Right to privacy: consider level and degree to which personality is in public eye. Department head, poliician, department head, level of power/jurisdicion: balance need for conideniality vs. disclosure.
