Single most important issue of our time: planet is definitely warming at faster pace than in past 12000 years, current controversy is about who/what is to blame, need to focus on what response should be. Physical geography: earth"s formation and composition, climate, beginnings of life on our planet. Paleoanthropology and archaeology: earliest ancestors, origins of agriculture, early civilizations. History: medieval and modern world to the present. Historical ecology: broad definition: research program looking at past, present, future relationship between humans and environment. Interdisciplinary in nature: geography, anthropology, sociology, biology, geology, etc. Karl marx historical material: materialism: emphasis on people and physical conditions of daily lives, matter over mind, historical changes as result of social conflict. Evolution by natural selection- charles darwin: emphasis on how species change over space and time, postulates: Individuals vary, born different: variations are passed down/inhereited, more offspring are produced that can survive, over reproduction, reproduction and survival are not random- perpetuation of advantageous traits.
