February 4, 2016 (finishing off from last week ) Economic restructuring blue collar work (4th cluster of manufacturing employment) is in decline. In manufacturing, unions were very dominant in previous years. 5th cluster government services associated w/ managing and planning cities. Informal economies, precarious work and unemployment are becoming normal in global cities as higher % of unemployment over the years, this was not a normal part of the economy. A section of population has become a surplus to the economy (10-12%??) They are irrelevant to the economy: surplus typically includes new immigrants. With more polarization, there is more conflict in cities: taking shape in various ways, often along the lines of race, leading to growing use of policing and security. Investment in welfare, public recreation in decline to fund policing. Prisons are a part of the city although generally left out prisons are growing and prisoners are from certain neighborhoods.
