Document Summary

The author made a large contribution to the social sciences. In this reading he discussed the state of philadelphia as it is the oldest settlement for african americans after they migrated from the south in the biggest internal migration movement. The philadelphia negro is his most notable work. According to his research there was work available for able-bodied people and a substantial amount of home ownership in the 1890s. Compared to chicago, the black neighbourhoods were described as an area of underclass where the majority were renters and most of the population was jobless. Philelphia consisted of enclaves of unassimilated groups of non-white, yet the seventh ward is by far the most striking mark of segregation because of the past history. Related to that that color prejudice prevented people from getting decent jobs, joining unions, get a stable job. All of which were problems of disabled people as well.
