Document Summary

Case study: retail invasion - new foreign chains in canada. Malls downtown (eaton centre) have relatively small footprints because of the available space. 100,000 people have access to the eaton centre through the path. Power retailing (big boxes, category killers, power centres, power nodes) Potential observation: although most business is in the hand of retail chains, most stores are independent stores. Traditional retail strips are where most people would go shopping. Usually no space for cars and high pedestrian traffic. Most prestigious part of the building is the ground floor. Servants would sleep on the top floor. (now, penthouses and most prestigious parts of the building are on the top floors) : in the olden days, they did not have the means to build tall buildings. Also, the top of the building was not easily accessible because of the climb so the wealthy would not want to live on the top floors.
