GGR252 Lecture 1!
Introduction!
!
-Accessibility and visibility are very valuable !
Highway barriers are absent around commercials areas, but present around residential areas!
-Location = space; the arrangement of land uses within a city or across a country; planned to some degree!
-Commercial land use vs. public sector land use!
Private sector (commercial) land use (e.g., shopping mall)!
-Seek out the most visible and the most accessible sites!
-Command the best sites!
-Dominant type of land use in downtown !
Tallest towers!
Most visible parts in terms of height and (under)ground level (e.g., PATH)!
-No obligation to the public!
Public sector land use (e.g., hospital)!
-General hospitals located in suburbs, which are widely spaced from each other !
Services the people around that location!
-Mix of general hospitals and specialized hospitals localized in central locations, which are close together!
Most are connected by underground tunnels and share helicopter pads!
Services a very large population!
Must be accessible to a very large number of people!
Central location of the city is most accessible to a very large number of people!
-Different mandates from private sector land use!
-Some public sector facilities also seek out the most visible and the most accessible sites!
-Attempt to service everybody equally !
E.g., distance from home to fire station!
-Environmental externalities = the closer you are to a facility, then the more you either enjoy or suffer the
externalities!
E.g., living next door to a shopping mall!
E.g., living next door to a fire station!
-Most people prefer to go to the physical shopping mall, or a combination with researching online !
Online shopping unlikely to replace physical shopping!
-Environmental determinism = the environment determines human activity (to some degree)!
The population also has a substantial (negative) impact on the environment!
-NEW office location: SS 5060!
-Marketing and marketing geography !
Geography adds to the ability to make decisions; not random!
-Which locations are best to expand?!
GIS = a tool for making maps, but also a tool for decision making !
-Where are the vulnerable populations located (e.g., very young and very old) relative to the hospitals?!
Demand and supply!
-Applies to the private and public sectors!
-We hear about supply and demand more in the private sector !
-Demand comes first!
-Supply cannot exist without demand!
-Supply can manipulate demand!
