Document Summary

Title: need to be descriptive - location (can"t assume people know) Legend: not always ideal to use legend as title for legend (if only one theme, use the name of theme - legend is very general) Map colouring: numbers in sequence but colours not in sequence: no sequence - e. g. land use, high contrast colours - draws attention: if all over the map there may be difficulty focusing. Location of map - too low on page (map is out of balance) Map scale - too large for map (wrong units) North arrow out of proportion, overlapping text, style is a little too much (not pirate map!) Purpose: determines what will be included (general reference vs. thematic: how it would look: tourist map vs. scientific map, reference map: every feature on the same plane -- focus can shift between different aspects at map. Nothing stands out too much: thematic map: one specific purpose -- maybe output of solving a problem.
