Governments have played an active role in managing food production & trade reasons why: Has to do with their dependence on climate & seasons. Bad season= a lot of agricultural price fluctuations. In global economy, bad season across the globe can affect agricultural prices in your domestic sphere. Keeping consumer prices stable for national security. Keeping producer prices stable for the health of the domestic industry and farmers as powerful political force. Protections can include a wide range of measures. Strategic use of borders by state gov in relation to flows of $, goods, and ppl. Rich countries have used surplus food production & their political influence in international trade in order to further national interests. With expansion of transnational agri-food corporations, interests may diverge from national interests. Agricultural subsidies intended to stabilize food prices & ensure plentiful food production, guarantee basic incomes for farmers, and strengthen national agricultural sector (includes protecting national ag sector from competing imports)
