th6 Feb 2012HPS250H Lecture 5 Karl PopperCARRYING ON FROM LAST LECTUREthe basic points of Logical PositivismThe experience would be laden with the theoryThere is an apple in front of me cannot be a pure observational statementNot all sensations are trusted we still need some filtrationHolism of meaningTherefore there are no purely observational statementsAnd so the question is how to live with theory ladeness The logical positivists tried to find a set of absolutely trustworthy observational statements and thus to build up science ie scientific knowledge Which was the wrong approachThere are 2 types of theories in our world instrumental theories theories that you pre supposeWhy we trust our sensesBecause of theory ladenessCarnaps ProbabilityWhen yo use a disconfirming instanceThe probability does not decreaseIt becomes refutedThe distinction below is importantStatistical propositionsAnd generalized propositions which we ascribe meaning toEg 2 propositions can be saying the same thing be equivalent all smokers17 of smokersBut in fact theey are not equvalent it is just because of the statistics
