Phoenicia and greece: mediterranean empires : introduction: maritime encounters and exchanges. (800 bce - 146 bce) They were not conquerors however, they went out and disposed presence in the mediterranean and had influence on many cultures: origins and geography. They were both ocean based cultures, competitives (greek and phoenicians) However they did not compete militarily but economically. Not enough open available land (mostly mountains) Were going by oceans and started at the cost of lebanon. Created ship technology to create sophisticated navigation. They went around the sea and established trading ports and colonies. They did not settle a lot of population however. Carthage was one of the most well known port of the phoenicians and also involved in the punic war with rome. Commercial alliances with israel ( but not political but economic) Not enough resources, not easy navigable rivers, not much land for agriculture. Greek classical period also known as (mycenaean) consisted of city states.
