Our own world is illed with irraionaliies. Our noion of irraionally ied with the idea of agency, which is also ied with individualism. The noion of the individual which is so pervasive in western society the basic unity of history and culture. One of the great criics was c. b. macpherson. Interested in how the idea of possessive individualism came out. Idea came in the late 20th century by margaret thatcher there is no place for individualism in society. Individualism linked to the decline of spiritual possession in western religions. Wanted to cleanse it of ecstaic elements. Wanted to create civil religion based on the idea of self-governing individuals. Began to be seen as an unacceptable manifestaion of chrisianity. Also had to do with the colonizaion of other parts of the world seen as areas that were full of spirit possession but yet were areas that european states were taking possession of.
