Turkey: under byzantine rule, conquered constantinople in 1453 -- turning point in the growth of the empire. In 1560 and 1570, they took over palestine and egypt: later expanded more into the middle east and north africa, grew out of a turkish tribe that adopted islam, so, it was considered a predominantly muslim empire. Jews were living in the areas taken over by the ottoman empire for many years. In addition, the encounter of the exiles with jewish local populations in the empire led to some tensions and conflicts that resulted in new developments and interpretations of religious tradition. It was adopted by both sephardic and ashkenazi jews: was so popular because of the invention of print in the 15th century = easier to spread and distribute texts. In the 16th century in this region, there were many cases of self-proclaimed messianism. Ladino literature was easier for them to understand.
