The aftermath of the war aided the spread of ideology (especially communism in russia) 1918-22: malnourishment caused the spread of spanish influenza = 50 million deaths. Mutilations: 21 million wounded, including invisible wounds (shell shock) American involvement in vietnam, iraq, deeply affected public in us: undermined fabric of political establishment of the country. Problem: after demobilization, there were 5-10 million men wanting to go back into the labour market (no jobs available) - pressure on labour market: hard to move from a military economy to selling consumer goods. Result: many veterans involved in political activism (both extreme left and right) Effects of the war: germany: kiel mutiny leading to german revolution, hungary: formation of a republic that went into a revolution.
