Italy - was an extremely unusual place - money economy, travel system. They would have advantages that they would capitalize on. Crusades - took advantage of them for the use of money. These would characterized larger italian towns in the south. Had trade and banking that made it rich. It grew rich and powerful because it made wool cloths that everyone wanted. Selling of high quality cloth made them rich. Florence had a monopoly for the wool within europe.
