This course considers the relationship between states in the postwar world. This course examines the continuing relationship between great powers, but also considers the expansion of the state system to include new states. It seeks to explore conflict and cooperation by examining both the relationships between states and how interstate relations shaped the lives of individuals and groups around the globe. The primary focus of the reading, research, and assignments in this class is on primary sources - especially newly declassified government records - that help explain state policies. By the end of the course, students will be familiar with the contours of international relations in the postwar world.
