Financial pressure on empires due to emergence of bipolar world. Understood that they needed to change society in order to protect. Fully supported nazi germany and collaborated with during the war. Offer of financial aid convinced many to join into union. Britain was not about to give them up. Divide and conquer - offered muslims a say. Allowed muslims the power to have their own party and even their own state. This allowed for a separate pakistan and india. No doubt that india would go independent post ww2. Followed by massacre of religious and ethnic minorities.
