HIS102Y1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Homo Sapiens
Document Summary
When did history begin ? from prehistory to the rst ancient empires. Humans are the only member of the homo" genus. Started using rudimentary tools million years ago. There was no private ownership of land. Small groups of people would live together. There was no concept of personal wealth. Mostly empty world: 70,000 years ago, there were approximately 10,000 humans. There was plenty of territory for everyone, and no reason for sustained con ict between groups. Theres an assumption that they were uncivilized, although they were not signi cantly inferior. Arrival of the neolithic era: beginning of agriculture. Neolithic: associated with beginnings of agriculture, and then permanently settled communities. Sedentary agriculture: a form of agriculture where the same land is farmed every year. It was not chosen by all cultures. It was not obviously a more advanced choice in all circumstances. Irrigation systems: allowed farming of terrain that was otherwise unusable.
